The Society for Historical and Natural Studies organises monthly lectures throughout the year. These lectures are open to all and cover a wide range of subjects.
The lecture
The first abbot of Cluny is treated ambiguously by his successors. Some do not name him at all. Modern historians also omit him, and I propose a solution to this problem.
The speaker
After training as a linguist, Martin Raether was professor of French and Italian literature at several universities in Germany, then director of the Centre Culturel "Maison Heinrich Heine" in Paris. He ended his career as a professor of comparative literature at the Université Jean Moulin in Lyon. He has lived in a village in the Côte Chalonnaise for 30 years, and has turned his attention to regional and local research.
An active member of the SEHN, of which he was president from 2016 to 2021, he is also a member of the Académie de Mâcon.
