Conférence "L'épopée de Bourgogne"

The Society for Historical and Natural Studies organises monthly lectures throughout the year. These lectures are open to all and cover a wide and varied range of topics.

As a one-off, we will meet at 5 pm so that Daniel Duplessis can talk to us about *L’épopée Bourguignonne*.

We will follow the lecture with drinks and conversation.

The lecture
The Grand Dukes of Burgundy recognised very early on the influence of the deep-rooted historical traditions across their domains. To unite these provinces, they drew upon ancient and medieval history to identify epic figures capable of embodying a sense of Burgundian identity.
We find a perfect illustration of this ideological and cultural framework, first and foremost, in the illuminated manuscripts commissioned to enrich their libraries.
Among these works, Jean Wauquelin, at the request of Philip the Good, compiled the chanson de geste *Girart de Roussillon, or The Epic of Burgundy*, the quintessential expression of a Carolingian lineage.
