Le cœur médiéval de Buxy

The name of Buxy probably comes from the Latin "buxetum", meaning a place planted with box.

Buxy through the ages

In the 10th century, Buxy was an important town, the main centre of the Vicaria Buxiancensi, then at the end of the century it became a dependency of the Counts of Chalon until 1237. In 1477, the king of France became the direct overlord of Buxy! At the end of the 19th century, the railway arrived in Buxy. A century later it had departed, clearing the way for the first cycle path in France: "La Voie Verte" or the Green Way.

On the "Route des Grands Vins de Bourgogne", Buxy is today a dynamic village that has managed to keep its Mediaeval appeal : by strolling around its streets you will find the Roman style church, the old houses on the Rue des Fossés, the cellars dug into the rock, the Saccazand tower (home of the last procureur general of the king) and of course, the 12th century "Tour Rouge" (Red Tower), emblem of the village.

The quality of the stone, exported worldwide, and the appellation Montagny which it shares with 3 other villages (Montagny-lès-Buxy, Jully-les-Buxy and Saint-Vallerin) have contributed to its reputation.
